He built a small one-room cabin and began raising his three children and two grandchildren. Osage National Historic Site In 1958, the government purchased the property and designated the site as a National Historic Site. In 1995, it was named in honor of Billy Ray. Visitors today find the rustic cabin still stands, overlooking the beautiful valley. Since its opening, the site has been a peaceful place for visitors to find peace and quiet while enjoying the beauty of the Ozark Mountains. Archeological Evidence More than 150 years ago, Billy Ray settled the area of his cabin with his family. Soon after, a large prairie grass fire destroyed much of the land. To commemorate this fire, local residents left scattered objects in the grass on the property. Archaeologists have uncovered over 5,000 artifacts at the site, including pottery and other artifacts. The most prominent of these artifacts are two sets of human remains that were found at the site. These remains were discovered in 1985 when the ranch owners began digging for a well. Human remains, possibly from an ancient burial site, were found buried in the dirt along with artifacts such as pottery and corn cobs. In 2001, a second burial site was found when a construction crew decided to dig a well on the property. A prehistoric cemetery was uncovered, consisting of 20 graves. These graves are covered with rocks and are the first prehistoric burial sites found in Oklahoma. Living Traditions The site is open to the public year round, offering visitors a glimpse into Osage history. Visitor center staff are available to answer questions about the living history exhibits. In addition, the site has three traditional Osage craft shops where visitors can learn about the techniques used in making the traditional Osage ceremonial dresses. Many of the craftsmen who make the dresses, such as the tambourine players, can be seen working in the traditional Osage ceremony in the festival. It is a great opportunity for visitors to learn about a very important part of the tribe’s culture. Named in Honor of Billy Ray Billy Ray was
